FEIJOA sellowiana
Short description
Pineapple Guava, Acca sellowiana A slow growing evergreen shrub with spoon shaped, grey-green leaves. Unusual flowers which look like a cross between aquilegia and fuchsia in shape are produce in late summer. The striking, slightly fleshy flowers consist of crimson, pink and white petals with prominent, star-burst like, crimson stamens. The flowers are followed by edible, guava flavoured fruits. This plant is a real talking point. Drought tolerant once established and also tolerant of salt laden winds ? so good in coastal areas. Pineapple Guava. Prefers a Sheltered site in full sun or partial shade. Height 4m after 20 years. Spread 3m after 20 years. Will tolerate most soil types but does not like a soil that is too wet. Care of Topiary Standards Trim annually with topiary shears or hedge-cutters in early or late summer to keep specimen in shape. Faster growing species may need to be trimmed twice or more each season. Suckers and unwanted branches can also be removed from the stems. Fertiliser such as Growmore can be applied once a year in the spring if desired, to help maintain the plant's vigour and appearance. Topiary can be grown in pots or containers but you need to make sure the pot is big enough for the specimen, and is well weighted to prevent it from falling over if the container has dried out, or there are high winds. The compost will need to be refreshed every 2 to 3 years. Topiary can suffer from Pests & Diseases. Look out for any tell-tale signs such as damaged leaves, adult moths, caterpillars, sooty moulds etc., and treat appropriately.Only 2 left
