Acer palmatum 'Red Wood'
Description: A small and attractive Japanese Maple with wonderful coral red branches and stems which provide colour in the garden during the winter months. The pretty, deeply palmate leaves are fresh green turning pink to clear yellow in autumn.
Is less vigorous than A. 'Senkaki' and so more suited to the smaller garden or a container specimen.
Climate/Position: For best colour prefers dappled shade in a sheltered spot to avoid leaf scorch in full sun or from frost and cold winds.
Height/Spread: ultimately can reach 6 x 4 metres. Grow as small multi stemmed tree or large shrub
Soil Requirements: Better on acid / neutral soils for best leaf coulours. Must be well drained - loamy sand would be ideal (dislikes winter wet).
Pruning: Best to avoid any pruning except formative shaping in early years if needed, and removal of any closely crossing or dead branches.
Special Requirements: As well as attractive throughout summer 'Redwood' is noted for excellent stem colour to be used to best effect in winter.
A selection of the popular 'coral bark maple' Acer palmatum 'Senkaki' which has improved stem colour especially on older stems.
