Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles'
Description: Noted for sweetly scented winter flowers which is a welcome addition to any garden. Glossy green foliage through much of the year with the evergreen leaves turning bronzy shade in winter. From autumn the plant is dotted with pendant creamy white flowers which have rich purplish 'freckles' and yellow stamens and these are produced through winter until the following spring.
Uses: Good for use on pergolas and arches especially for areas walked through in winter where scent can be fully appreciated.
Climate/Position: Full sun or partial shade. Some shelter from winter winds prefered.
Height/Spread: 3 to 4 metres height though little ground space used.
Soil Requirements: Suited to range of soils though should be free draining. Avoid the roots drying out in summer suns.
Pruning: Growth may be trimmed after flowering in late winter
Special Requirements: Best if given a mulch over the roots in spring to aid moisture retention.
Additional Interest: Self clinging requires little effort to grow.
