Daphne mezereum var. rubra
Description: A lovely medium sized, deciduous shrub. From late February it bears fragrant, purple-red flowers on bare stems. It may produce scarlet, poisonous berries in late summer. It thrives on chalky soils, in a sunny position.
Uses: This delightful shrub is ideal for planting in containers close to a doorway, where you will appreciate the amazing heady fragrance as you go by. Also useful for banks and slopes, beds and borders.
Climate/Position: Full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position.
Height/Spread: Height and spread to 1.2 meters.
Soil Requirements: Fertile, moist but well-drained. Well-drained.
Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering, if required.
Special Requirements: Mulch to keep roots cool. Daphnes resent transplanting.
Additional Interest: Will tolerate chalky soils. CAUTION toxic if eaten/skin irritant.
