Hosta 'Patriot'
Description: 'Patriot' is a vigorous variegated hosta, possibly the best white-edged variety with mid-green leaves and a wide white margins around the edge which gives a strong light effect especially effective for illuminating shady areas of the garden.
Uses: Suitable for use in a border as ground cover or patio container. Good for spring and summer interest.
Climate/Position: A shade lover but also tolerant of full morning sun.
Height/Spread: Forms a dense mat of leaves to 30cm spread 30 cm, flower spikes taller
Soil Requirements: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil will give best results. Hostas benefit from plenty of organic matter being added to the soil before planting and annually as a mulch.
Pruning: No pruning just tidy plants in autumn as leaves die back after frosts.
Special Requirements: They also enjoy being mulched in spring and autumn to help retain moisture in the soil. A rough surface of bark chips or grit around the plant will help deter slugs.
Additional Interest: Hostas were introduced by Austrian botanist Nicholas Host (1761-1834) and remain very popular as garden plants with many new varieties being introduced in recent year. Patriot is a sport of Hosta 'Francee'.
