Knautia macedonica 'Thunder and Lightning'
Description: A clump forming perennial and this recently introduced cultivar is shorter than the species with clean and fresh silver variegated foliage. This contrasts beautifully with the fully double, dark magenta pincushion like flowers and make a stunning and long lasting show from June-Aug. The profusion of flowers are particularly attractive to bees and butterflies. The flowers look very similar to its close relative Scabious except for the rich dark colour.
Uses: Good in any mixed border as individual plants or in drifts. Also good mixed near the front of grasses. This attractive and compact form could also be used for container planting.
Climate / Position: Sun loving and drought tolerant
Height / Spread: Height 40 cm. Spread 40cm.
Soil Requirements: Fertile, well- drained, alkaline soil (ie high pH).
Pruning: If naturalised then avoid cutting back after flowering to ensure the plant has dropped seed to add to the future display.
