Conifer Colour

Conifer Colour

Deciduous Conifers give a great autumn display of colour. Though not as well known as many of the evergreen Conifers, there are some truly lovely colouration options in stock.

We have highlighted a few deciduous Conifers below looking excellent on site at the moment.

Metasequoia gly. 'Amber Glow'. Foliage with deep midribs emerge with a touch of burgundy in spring, maturing to yellow foliage in the summer before turning to orange in the autumn. Red- brown textured bark. Tolerant of full sun and resistant to burn.  Conical in shape and reaching 9m in height. Ideal for wet soils.

Taxodium distichum 'Nutans'.  Another contender for a damp soil. Conical habit with a spiral twist to the stem when mature. The stem has deep grooves revealing the red wood beneath. The young shoots emerge green in the spring, remaining green all season before turning a rich deep orange  - brown in the autumn. Once mature and in very damp soil, the roots appear from the ground like stalagmites.

Ginkgo biloba. Brilliant yellow autumn foliage in the autumn, so familiar from images of China and Japan. The flattened two-lobed foliage is green all summer long and unusual in shape compared to many conifers. This delightful living fossil gets the best autumn foliage colour when planted in full sun. Height 8 to 12m

Ginkgo biloba 'Mariken'. A dwarf variety of Ginkgo biloba introduced from the Netherlands. Slow growing and compact with a slight weeping habit reaching 2.5m in height. Ideal for a small garden.

Taxodium distichum 'Pendens'. Delightful drooping branches with soft green foliage turning a rich brown in the autumn before falling. Narrow, pyramidal, weeping habit. Red- brown bark. Height 15m.
