Provender Picks for February:  Lagerstroemia

If you are looking for something that little bit different that will be a talking point and grow into a large shrub or small tree then Lagerstroemia is where it is at.

It is hugely popular in Mediterranean gardens and has amazing smooth, multi-coloured peeling bark with age.  In the late summer from August to October an abundance of panicles of brightly coloured flowers are freely produced.  Each flowering panicle reaches 15cm in size.  Each individual flower is slightly crinkled in appearance enhancing the overall allure of this lesser known tree.  They provide a welcome blast of flower colour late in the season and also have glorious autumn foliage colour in hues of yellow and orange.  The bark keeps its interest all year round and is subtle in shades of grey, fawn brown and light tan often with pink tinges.

Lagerstroemia have an open growth habit and are a perfect choice for the smaller garden especially if you like a Mediterranean style.

Lagerstroemia grow into an open habit and are excellent for use as multistems and planted in a mixed sunny border.  They prefer a sunny position and are a viable alternative for planting in place of an Olive.
