Ericaceous Plants. Camellia

Ericaceous Plants. Camellia

Camellia are probably one of the most well know plant choices for an ericaceous soil.  Camellias are perfect for planting at this time of year. Clean, glossy evergreen foliage act as the perfect foil for the large ornamental flowers Camellia are so well known for. We have some excellent plants in stock – dripping with bud and ready to go in the next week or two to start flowering for a good 2 months or so.

Camellias are happy in the ground and in containers as long as they are planted in ericaceous compost and kept well-watered.  An annual feed with an ericaceous slow release fertiliser will ensure healthy growth and glossy green foliage.

Camellia japonica will flower from January through to April. We currently have loads of varieties in stock with more to come. Anything you like from 3L to 350L specimens! We even have the odd standard thrown in for that formal look.

Some of the varieties to highlight are:

  • Ace of Hearts – light red, semi-double flowers
  • Blood of China – salmon-red, peony form flowers
  • Bonomania – double pink flowers
  • Brushfields Yellow – creamy yellow anemone form flowers
  • Doctor King – light red, semi-double flowers
  • Kramer’s Supreme – rose-red, flat and fragrant flowers
  • Lady Campbell – rose-red, medium double flowers
  • Laura Bray – soft pink, semi double flowers
  • Margaret Davis – double white flowers edged with red-pink
  • Moshe Dayan – double white flowers
  • Silver Anniversary – white flowers with a yellow centre

With careful choice Camellia can be in flower from autumn to late spring / early summer which leads me nicely onto Camellia sasanqua.
