Relatively unknown and most definitely underused in winter gardens or as seasonal interest is the stunning Camellia sasanqua – the autumn flowering Camellia.
Earlier to flower than the better known Camellia japonica and x williamsii, Camellia sasanqua has the benefit of subtle, spicy, tea-scented flowers which are freely produced from late autumn to early spring.
Evergreen, glossy, dark green leaves act as a perfect foil for the buds from which emerge scented simple flowers emerge.
The frosts that often occur at this time of year do not affect the blooms at all.
Available in a mind boggling range of shapes, sizes and forms from bush, pleached, standards, panels and glorious centre piece cloud pruned plants.
