Photinias are the ideal hedging plant. They are low-maintenance and have fantastic foliage colour. Here are a few we would like to highlight:
Photinia x Fraseri ‘Red Robin’ (Christmas berry ‘Red Robin’) is the most popular type of Photinia when it comes to hedging plants. Why? It has glossy evergreen foliage that emerges bright red in colour before changing to green in the summer months. It has gorgeous white flowers that appear in the spring and glow against the red foliage. Red Robin likes moist but well-drained soil and full sun/partial shade. Red Robin is available in many sizes.
Photinia x fraseri 'Carré Rouge' (Christmas berry 'Carré Rouge') is a new variety of Photinia. It is very similar and closely related to Red Robin. Carré Rouge is a compact, erect, evergreen shrub that will eventually reach a height of 2.5m. Just like Red Robin, Carré Rouge also has red leaves that turn a dark shade of green. Likes full sun or semi-shade and moist but well-drained soil.
Photinia serratifolia ‘Crunchy’ is still fairly new to the market. It has dense upright growth. The new leaves are serrated along the leaf margins and emerge an attractive coppery colour that then change slowly to dark green. It is a more subtle choice than Red Robin. Crunchy reaches a height of 2.5m. Likes full sun or semi-shade and moist but well-drained soil.
Photinia x fraseri 'Pink Marble' ('Cassini') has variegated cream and green leaves that start off a bright pinky-red. Clusters of white flowers appear April-May to complement the colourful foliage. Pink Marble likes full sun or semi shade and moist, well-drained soils.
