We have two fabulous Parrotia options to show off today - Parrotia persica and Parrotia persica 'Vanessa'.
Parrotia persica, commonly known as Persian Ironwood, is a beautiful small tree or large shrub admired for its attractive flaking bark and stunning autumn colour palette, with the leaves turning red, purple and gold. Parrotia persica has a wide-spreading, rounded form and is a fantastic choice for parks and low maintenance gardens. Thrives in moist but well-drained soil and full/partial sun.
Parrotia persica 'Vanessa' is a small upright tree that also has attractive flaking bark. This variety produces small, showy, red flowers on bare stems in late winter and early spring. The young foliage emerges with red and bronze tones, transitioning to green in the summer, before producing spectacular autumn colour with shades of red, orange and purple. 'Vanessa' works well in parks, cottage and informal gardens, city and courtyard gardens and also low maintenance gardens. Works best in moist but well-drained soil and full sun.
Both of the above trees add visual interest all year-round.
