Carpinus betulus ‘Monumentalis’ or Dwarf Hornbeam has a delightful shape – conical, almost candle flame-like in silhouette.
This sturdy Carpinus is a slower growing variety that forms the conical shape with no pruning needed. The foliage is particularly dense and as with all Carpinus turns a strong yellow colour in the autumn. The leaves then turn russet in colour and are held on the tree through the winter months. Fantastic long catkins are borne in the spring too. The best foliage colour is developed in full sun. Height 3-5m.
The shape of the Carpinus betulus ‘Monumentalis’ lends itself beautifully to stand alone planting as a specimen option or alternatively in a mixed border with low planting.
