We are all familiar with the aches and pains that our industry brings and Tiger Balm is often used for pulled or strained muscles. Did you know that the good old Gaultheria provides the essence for Tiger Balm? A useful plant all round. Squish a berry and you’ll smell Tiger Balm.
Gaultheria has lots of other useful applications in the garden too!
All Gaultheria flower heavily with pale pink or white flowers in the summer that are then followed by a profusion of berries in the autumn and winter months. The berries are held until the spring. The leaves also take on a slight red tinge in the colder winter months. This little plant reaches about 15cm in height and works hard to be noticed.
Gaultheria are useful in the ground and as container plants and ideal for acidic / ericaceous and low pH soils and also for difficult clay soils too. They are exceptionally hardy and do not suffer in the colder months at all.
We have some excellent new Gaultheria varieties in stock at the moment.
Big Berry does what it says on the tin basically! Large red berries are produced in profusion.
Pearls has large white berries reminiscent of pearls.
