Plant of the Week: Skimmia

Plant of the Week: Skimmia

It’s a rare plant that gives interest all year, with masses of spring flowers followed by brilliant red berries and glossy evergreen foliage all through autumn and winter. It’s an even rarer one that does so without getting too unruly, staying neat and compact without demanding any attention in return.

Skimmia does all this and more. There are two types: male plants which major on flowers, and females which have berries. If you haven’t room for both, try one of the new self-pollinating varieties. Partner with other winter beauties like hellebores, cyclamen and heathers and enjoy the display for the rest of your gardening year.
