Lonicera nitida Ernest Wilson

Lonicera nitida Ernest Wilson

A long name for a plant with a little leaf! Named after the well known plant hunter Ernest Wilson.  Sometimes known as the Boxleaf Honeysuckle you can see why Lonicera nitida species are an invaluable alternative to Buxus hedging as they can be clipped tightly without any leaf loss.  The resulting hedge is solid and dense – just what you want a hedge to be!

If you are looking for a low-growing hedging plant that reaches about 1.2 -1.5m happily and without much fuss then this is for you.  An economical choice for a tightly clipped hedge.  The habit is slightly arching and the evergreen leaves are small, glossy and dark green.

Lonicera nitida Ernest Wilson can reach above 1.5m but does tend to then lose leaf at the base of the plant so it is best clipped to a height below that.  Grows well in sun or shade

Great for coastal, formal, cottage garden style and informal hedging.  Drought tolerant once established and an excellent choice for urban areas as it handles pollution with no adverse effects and conversely great in rural areas where it is resilient to rabbits and deer.
