National Tree Week. Screening Trees. The Spotlight is on Pleached Trees.

Screening trees are an important element of design used either to create privacy, create walkways, leading to focal points and also for bringing a design into a smaller space and acting as a background to block out unsightly views.   Pleached trees are often the first choice for many when considering screening trees.  Other options are available – please check out our Trees For Screening factsheet for options.

Pleached trees are defined as a frame that creates a two dimensional effect with branches spreading sideways in one plane on top of a clear stem of 1.8m.  Perfect for planting next to a fence where planning permission is needed to extend a fence above 1.8m.

There is no doubt that the popularity and demand for pleached tree options has risen dramatically in the last few years.  With a rise in demand the area in the tree field that we hold over to pleached trees has risen in size in the last few years to satisfy that demand.  The options on site include evergreen and deciduous pleached tree choices.

Today, we cast the spotlight on some excellent options:

Amelanchier lamarckii.  Deciduous.  White flowers in spring.

Carpinus betulus.  Hornbeam.  Deciduous but holds it leaves in the winter.  Mid green leaves in summer months.  Copper- russet leaves are held through the winter months.

Fagus sylvatica.  Deciduous but holds it leaves in the winter.  Rich, golden copper foliage is held on the tree through the winter months.

Photinia x fra.  Red Robin.  Evergreen foliage.  New foliage is bright red in colour.

Ilex Nellie R Stevens.  Evergreen foliage.  Orange-red fruits are held through the winter

Prunus lus. Myrtifolia.  Evergreen glossy green foliage.  Great choice for filtering air pollution.
