Aucuba are tough plants with handsome foliage often variegated to give a splash of colour in a shaded spot. The colouration of the leaves is stronger in more shaded positions.
Useful as a hedging option, Aucuba need little fussing over. Happy in most soils and with little pruning required. Once established they are drought tolerant and will benefit from a mulch each autumn and a slow release feed each year. The red berries are borne on female plants or plants that self-pollinate.
