Are you looking for Burning Love?

We have it here on site in amongst the Leucothoe.  I can never hear this plant name without singing Elvis in my head!

Native to North America and Japan, these attractive and useful shrubs have really gained in popularity in the last few years.  With handsome evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves and at home in moist, acidic soils in deep or partial shade – they really do fill an awkward spot well.  The leaves colour in the autumn and become more intense as the cold weather continues through the winter months with the new spring growth emerging with red shoots too – 3 seasons interest in one plant.

Leucothoe Burning Love has green leaves that turn scarlet over the winter
Leucothoe Curly Red has leaves that change from red to purple over the colder months
Leucothoe Scarletta has long, slim, glossy evergreen leaves, green and turning bronze with wine tints in the autumn and winter. New growth in the spring also has vibrant deep red colour
Leucothoe Rainbow has cream, yellow and pink leaves on arching stems
Leucothoe Whitewater has leaves that are edged with a white margin.  New growth is wine-pink in the spring
Leucothoe Royal Ruby colours red and burgundy in the colder weather

Although the descriptions may appear similar – there are significant differences in leaf shape and colour to warrant planting more than one variety for added interest through the autumn and winter months.  So they are looking great now with their winter plumage and really beginning to take hold with a promise of new growth colour as an added bonus in the spring.  What can you plant them with?  All three varieties look great together in a bed, but also look good with Camellia, Pieris, Rhododendron and other ericaceous plants.
