Corylopsis spicata - a spring delight

Corylopsis spicata - a spring delight

Each year Corylopsis herald the arrival of spring with their pendant racemes of fragrant, pale primrose yellow flowers hanging from bare branches between march and April.

All Corylopsis are slow growing and are well worth the wait.  Best planted near a path where the winter scent can be appreciated in the early spring.  Plant with Cyclamen coum beneath for an early spring display.

We have 3 Corylopsis to choose from on site:

Corylopsis pauciflora is scented and each pale yellow petal dangles downwards forming a pendant of pale primrose coloured flowers. Height 2.5m.  Spread 1.5m

Corylopsis spicata is also fragrant and has small pale yellow pendant flowers.  This choice is a little wider in spread that pauciflora.  Height 2m.  Spread 3m.

New to the Corylopsis crowd, we have Corylopsis sinensis Spring Purple produces oval shaped leaves that are tinged purple when young.  The foliage as it matures develops a blue-green hue beneath, green above and colours to orange and purple in the autumn.  The flowers are also pale yellow and slightly more open than other choices above.  Spring Purple also grows into a slightly larger shrub reaching up to 4m in height and spread.
