Dramatic leaf colour and architectural foliage, Astelia are a designer’s dream plant.
Bringing structure, form and subtle shades of grey in the sword-shaped leaves, Astelia add a certain something to a planting plan with their clumping habit. Coastal, architectural, low maintenance and in mixed borders, Astelia are quite versatile in their uses.
Classed as an evergreen perennial and similar to small Phormium in structure they are more subtle in their colouring. The silver – grey leaves are cool in ambience and hot in their presence in a mixed planting. They can also be used to great effect in group planting.
Astelia are happy in pots or in the ground they look excellent when planted with contrasting, hot colour perennials which zing when planted close by. Plant in tall contemporary pots for a real wow factor. They require sun to semi-shade and a moist, but well drained peaty soil.
Silver Spear has large, broad silver grey, strappy leaves reaching 1m – 1.3m when mature
Silver Shadow is slightly more vigorous and will reach 1m-1.2m in height and 2m spread
Son of Red Devil is the smallest of the bunch with long slender leaves of metallic rich red and bronze. The leaf colour deepens in colder weather. Son of Red Devil is slightly more shade tolerant than other Astelia
