Ensete ventricosum Maurelii. If you want huge architectural leaves and a bit of pizzazz for your planting border then the enormous paddle shaped red-bronze – green leaves of the Ensete will provide all that and more from its sturdy thick trunk and purple-red stems.
The leaf colour is accentuated by the deep midribs that are highlighted deep red in colour matching the hue of the trunk.
Ina single season, Ensete can reach over 2.5m in height creating a stunning display of shiny brightly coloured foliage. Given the right conditions Ensete can reach a gargantuan 5m in height.
Ensete can take some low temperatures but will benefit from being either cut back and protected in the winter months or digging up and bringing into a greenhouse or conservatory.
A perfect choice for the centre of a border or in a container Ensete loves a warm, sunny position in well drained soil.
